1912

A Duel for the Ages

On September 6, 1912, in an historic match-up of two great pitchers, Smoky Joe Wood out-duels Walter Johnson in a 1-0 win for Boston over Washington at Fenway Park. Johnson and Wood were two of the hardest throwing pitchers of their era. When asked in a 1912 interview whether or not he could throw harder than Wood, Johnson replied: "Can I throw harder than Joe Wood? Listen, my friend, there's no man alive that can throw harder than Smoky Joe Wood."
