David Ortiz, Kevin McHale headline honorees of annual ‘Tradition’

Taylor Twellman, Mike Milbury, Angela Ruggiero, and Ben Coates will take the TD Garden stage, as well.

Now in its 20th year, The Sports Museum’s annual gala, known as “The Tradition,” has long been established as a special night on Boston’s sports calendar. And with the lineup attending this year, the 2021 edition should be no different.

Not only does the list of honorees represent some of the best ever to play for the local franchises, it’s an event loaded with recognizable stars who should have plenty of stories to share — and absolutely boast the personalities to share them in a most entertaining way.

The icons set to take the stage this year include the Red Sox’ David Ortiz, the Celtics’ Kevin McHale, the Revolution’s Taylor Twellman, and the Bruins’ Mike Milbury, all of whom have gone on to prominent national broadcasting careers. They’ll be joined by Hockey Hall of Famer, Angela Ruggiero, who played locally for both Harvard University and the Boston Blades, and former Patriots tight end Ben Coates, who fans of a certain age associate with No. 87 just as much as they do Rob Gronkowski.

The event will be hosted by NESN’s Tom Caron and journalism legend Jackie MacMullan, with net proceeds from the $350 tickets going to support The Sports Museum and its educational programs for at-risk kids in the community. According to organizers, “The event also offers a once in a lifetime experience to mingle with some of New England’s most legendary athletes and industry leaders. Each ticket includes access to complimentary premium food and beverage during the gala reception on TD Garden’s arena floor and a seat at the ‘talk-show’ style awards ceremony.”

The gala starts at 6 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 7:45.
