Sweeney’s Contributions to Bruins Organization Go Well Beyond the Ice

For his efforts guiding the Foundation, as well as his six years with the Black & Gold, Sweeney received the hockey legacy award at Wednesday night’s 22nd annual Tradition gala at TD Garden. Sweeney was feted alongside Patriots Hall of Famer Kevin Faulk, baseball Hall of Famer and Red Sox great Dennis Eckersley, former Celtics head coach and 2008 NBA champion Doc Rivers, UFC founder Dana White, and former Team USA women’s soccer goalkeeper Briana Scurry.

Now, 17 years later, Damon is returning to Boston to receive the Baseball Legacy Award at “The Tradition,” the Sports Museum’s annual gala Dec. 7 at TD Garden. The event also honors Bill Rodgers, Lawyer Milloy, Chanté Bonds, Jillian Dempsey, M.L. Carr, and Mark Recchi, and helps raise money for The Sports Museum’s anti-bullying programs.

Seven Boston sports greats who each won titles were honored during the 21st edition of The Tradition on Wednesday. The annual fundraising gala at TD Garden helps support The Sports Museum, one of the longest-running sports museums in the country, as well as the educational programs that the nonprofit educational institution provides to at-risk children in the community.

By day, Dempsey is a mild-mannered fifth-grade teacher in the Winthrop Public Schools. By night — or to be honest, sometimes at sunrise as well — she dons her skates as a professional hockey player who is speedy and assertive, dangerous near the net, and dogged when she plays defense.
